In the IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 you are required to write a summary of at least 150 words in response to a graph (bar, line or pie graph), table, chart, or process (how something works, how something is done). You should spend about 20 minutes on it. This task tests your ability to select and report the main features, to describe and compare data, identify significance and trends in factual information, or describe a process.

Do you know the difference between STATIC charts and DYNAMIC charts? Let's find out...

Which of the 2 charts below is a STATIC chart?

1)

Dynamicchart

2)

Staticchart

The correct answer is 2.

STATIC Charts contain data points belonging to either a single time frame - such as one year, one month etc. - or have no time reference at all. DYNAMIC charts, on the other hand, contain data points in a number of time periods – for example 24 hours from 12 am to 12pm, 10 years from 2000 to 2010 or days from Friday to Sunday.

It’s amazing that some students enter the IELTS exam without knowing this vital difference. It’s vital because the way that you write the essay is completely different for a STATIC chart vs. a DYNAMIC chart. In a DYNAMIC chart, you describe how things go up and down, change or stay the same OVER DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS. In a STATIC chart, you describe how things are similar or different, bigger or smaller INSIDE ONE TIME PERIOD.

In today's IELTS playlist, you will learn how to write a report on static charts for the IELTS Academic Writing Task 1.

very useful! i used to go to the exam without knowing this difference. I was approching dynamic and static diagrams as if it were a dynamic chart and i believe that it is the main reason why i always score 5.5 in ielts test.

    Hi M.Akif,

Often the reason for low scores in Academic writing is not incorrect English but a lack of understanding of the marking criteria. Once you understand how the IELTS examiners mark your tasks, you will be able to quickly improve your scores.
