IELTS General Writing Task 1 with model answer
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic
A friend has offered you some work in his company. You are currently employed and not able to start for 3 months.
Write a reply to your friend. In your letter:
- give details of what you know about his company.
- explain your current situation
- give your answer to the offer and explain why
Write at least 150 words.
Dear Sanya,
I am obliged to you for offering me the job opportunity in your software company ‘White Way Web’. I am very well aware that your company has grown in leaps and bounds; thus, I am on cloud nine since I received the offer letter.
However, I regret to inform you that at present I am working on three month long project in Infotech Solutions; as a result, I am unable to join White Way Web straightaway. Even I can’t leave the burden of the project on other team members too because I am the key person who knows the project from top to bottom.
I am very pleased with the offer because the salary package and other terms and conditions which you are offering me are far better than what my current employer is giving. If there is no urgency to fill the vacant post then I request you to please accept my application for the same post after three months.
I hope you will understand my situation. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Is this semi formal letter? Can we use idioms such as on cloud nine” , in this type of letter???

Hi Shawn,
How are you doing? I am thankful to you for the job offer in your company XYZ limited as ‘Senior Technical Specialists’. But due to some legal obligations, I’ll not be able to join for the three months.
XYZ limited is reputed company in Information and Technology world with billion dollars revenue club. I got very good feedback from lot of my friends about the company. It has employee friendly policies as well as offers good compensation along with flexibility in working hours. It has presence across the globe and in all the major cities in India which gives an opportunity to choose the location of our convinence.
In my current organisation, I’m working on multiple projects which are very critical in terms of business as clients I’m working with is having 15 years of long relationship with company. We need to inform customer’s manager three months prior to any change in roles and responsibilities as well as I’m legally abided to server the three months of compulsary notice period with my current company.
I’m gracefully accepting the offer made as I don’t want to miss golden opportunity to be the part of such a fantastic organisation which will give me good work-life balance. But, I’ll join after three months upon completion of mandatory notice period.
I look forward to see you in your office soon.

Dear TJ,
Trust this meets you well. I was ecstatic when I received the mail offer for the Head of Compliance at your IT firm. I want you to know that this made my entire year as I am also aware that your firm now serve a larger segment of the sector because it has grown its customer base by acquiring a FINTECH Ecommerce company to meet the demands.
However, I am abit concerned because I will be unable to start off in the new job until three months from now. This is because our yearly executive management retreat just kicked off and we are to demonstrate some new business discoveries we made. I came up with these couple of strategies during my last trip to hongkong on a business development training which I am to present and drive as the key person. This should take about 2-3 months from start to implementation phase once approved by the board .
I pray you understand my plight as this cannot be handled by none other except me. I would be the happiest if there is no urgency as to filling the position as nothing would gladden my heart more than to come on board as soon as I am through with my commitment over here. I also noted the package that comes with the position as it suits my expectations.

I am very aware that your company is one the retail giant and doing business in both In-stores and e-commerce. One example, I recently purchase an IPad from your company’s online website. I also know that your organization have very employee friendly policies.
At present am serving notice period with XYZ; as a result, I cannot join your firm in next 3 months. Moreover, am trying to wrap the work in hand. I wish, I join your firm on requested data but am left with no options to sever agreed bond.
Once again, I am very sorry for this and I hope you will understand my position. I would like to keep communication open between us on this and looking forward to hearing your correspondence.
