IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

It is possible to live a full life without internet access. Give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Model Answer:

The Internet, despite being a recent invention, has rapidly pervaded our daily lives. We access the internet at work,  and even at home we often go online for entertainment. As such, some even believe that having internet access is key to leading a life that is comfortable, and enriching. While I believe the internet has certainly contributed to raising our living standards, I do not believe having internet access is the only requirement to lead a full life, which I will explain below.

One way the Internet has enriched our lives is by providing vast and easily accessible stores of information. Knowledge is easily shared online, across diverse communities, allowing us the ability to pick up new skills and even grow our earning abilities. However, the Internet is not the sole repository of knowledge – without internet access, people can still consult books or seek the expert opinion of professionals in the field. Indeed, such sources of information are sometimes more accurate than what can be obtained on the internet. Infact,  the United States Government is currently investigating claims that false information was widely disseminated on the Internet during its last elections, which may even have caused people relying on the information obtained online to have made wrong decisions.

Having considered the above, I am of the opinion that having access to the internet is advantageous if people use it wisely, as it can bring benefits such as improving knowledge and enable easy communication. However, as I have shown above, having access to the internet is not necessary to ensure a fulfilling life is lead as there are substitutes if the internet is not available. Indeed, I believe that improper use of the internet such as reliance on wrong information online, and becoming addicted to the internet may even bring grievous harm to the internet user.
