IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

According to a recent study, the more time people use the Internet, the less time they spend with real human beings. Some people say that instead of seeing the Internet as a way of opening up new communication possibilities world- wide, we should be concerned about the effect this is having on social interaction. How far do you agree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

The tremendous improvements in technology, particularly the Internet, immensely help people in rapid and easy communication. While some support the benefits of this cyberspace, few others overemphasize its negative aspects on social relationships; nevertheless, I assert that the social networking websites strengthen the relationships between the people.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that the Internet detaches its users from the real world. The main reason for believing this is that an increasing rate of Internet addiction syndrome among the younger generations. On account of the continuous exposure to a diverse range of websites, their curiosity to learn more makes them spend more time in front of computers and other technological devices. For instance, nowadays it is commonplace to see a multitude of children fiddling around with their latest gadgets and gizmos. Consequently, they become couch potatoes, which further affects their social as well as physical and mental health. Therefore, it is easy to see why this argument has gained support.

On the contrary, it is also possible to make the opposing case. First of all, the Internet and social networks, in fact, connect people beyond the boundaries. For example, a daily conversation with my international friend would not have been possible without this technology. Secondly, despite being a time-consuming method, it provides a plethora of opportunities to explore new people, different countries and cultures without traveling. What's more, it is helpful in numerous ways to hone our skills and abilities. A good illustration is online Ielts buddies where the Ielts learners find their best companions and practice speaking. Thus, it goes without saying that this viewpoint is credible and realistic too.

Having considered a range of arguments, I have drawn the conclusion that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Hence, I am strongly inclined to the opinion that the cyberspace facilitates a rewarding social relationship as well as widens the horizons of people.
