IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic
Some people think that art is essential subject for children at school while others think it is a waste of time.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

One of the highly controversial topics today relates to whether art is a crucial subject for school children or not. In this essay, I am going to shed some light on this question from both points of view and then give my own opinion on the matter.
On one side of the argument, there are people who argue that the benefits of art as an academic subject considerably outweigh its disadvantages. The main reason for believing this is that art is the translation of the imagination of an individual on paper; thus, art aids students in broadening their thinking. It is also possible to say that art acts as a medium for the shy pupils to express their emotions directly. One good illustration of this is that children express their love and emotions for their parents by creating a birthday card using their creativity, provided they had learned this art at the school level. Therefore, it is easy to see why this argument has gained support.
On the other hand, people often argue that art is just a waste of time. People often have this opinion because students are already burdened with other academic subjects; thus adding art subject will enhance that study load. Additionally, nowadays there are no job prospects for students in art; consequently, they opt for other vocational subjects. To exemplify, students choose either science or commerce stream, which have jobs available in abundance. Hence, it goes without saying that this viewpoint is credible and realistic.
In my opinion, both arguments have their merits. On balance, however, I tend to believe that art should be optional subject keeping in mind that job prospect of students are is of utmost importance.

Nowadays, whether art is important or not is considered as a Controversial subject. Few masses presume that art should be a compulsory subject in a school while others argue it . In this essay, I wil discuss both sides of the coin along with my own perspective.
On the one hand,why art is pivotal, it helps in cognitive development of a person. To justify it, art helps in presenting hidden talent of people in front of wider audience. Thus, it is a medium through which an individual can express his feelings and emotion and develop his cognition skills.
On the other hand, why art should not be a major subject is ,it does not provide job opportunities to the masses . Additionally, it increases the pressure and workload on children’s and sometimes children’s become depressed due to excessive burden.
To conclude, I personally believe that art has both pros and cons and it should be an optional subject in academic institutions.
I am not a Ielts teacher but I realise Brother at least 250 words require in this task you define it well but make sure your words not be less than 250 otherwise they will deduct your marks

It is considered by some people that art is an important subject that should be included at schools. Whereas, other folks believe that it is wasting the children’s time. This following paragraphs will highlight both views along with my perspective on this.
On the one hand, in the recent past art was considered to be basic subject at schools and even the children were marked on their performance. Art classes allows the teachers to assess the children’s ability, as well as, give the child a chance to express his/her emotions. For example, many talented musicians have been discovered during tuition time. Moreover, other are taught how to participate in a play. Consequently, they became a very famous actors and actress.
On the other hand, others believe that studying science, as well as, maths are a way better than art. Many kids are not allowed to go for art classes due to their parents’ instructions. For example, parents who want their kids to be a doctor or an engineer do not believe in art as a subject, they create an angry child who struggle between his hobbies and his father’s wishes. Furthermore, they think that art will not gain money if the child took it as a career in the future.
To sum up, art is an essential subject at school. However some people think that it is useless to the students. In my opinion, art is important as it help the children to explore themselves and to identify their needs.
At my childhood, my parents would be happy to hear that our teachers replaced painting class or music class with math or English class, in their eyes, I should spend more time in “utilitarian” class. With almost twenty years passed, this phenomenon is probably going to change. Some people recognize the importance of art and urge schools to classify art class as essential subjects. For them, it is important to cultivate art tastes from an early age and the best way for that is to invest more time in art class at school.
Others do not share this opinion, still thinking that the priority for schools is still utilitarian things, like math, physics and English.
In my opinion, schools could attach more importance to art education, on the one hand, there are many families that cannot offer their kids after-school activities. For those kids, the only place to get access to art is schools. Therefore, schools open more opportunities for them, maybe some talented kid can be found in this way, right? What’s more, what is the definition of “utilitarian”? Studying arts benefit to mental development and can explore kids’ creativity, which is scientifically proven. In this way, it can also be of great use in the long term, just as what is said in a Chinese proverb, “Something which seems useless can be a great use in the future”. Last but not least, as we have this memory: it is more relaxing in painting or music class at school. More art class can help release kids from pressure of solving math problems.
For decades, art is taught to children in schools. However, policymakers, administrators, and parents often debate on the importance of art in the school’s curriculum. This essay will discuss both facets of the argument, before arriving at my point of view.
Numerous reasons lead people to believe that teaching art at school is quintessential. Firstly, art connects pupils to one’s culture and traditions. To be a responsible citizen, it is important for a person to know their roots and traditions, and teaching art in school familiarizes students with their artistic heritage such as paintings, folk dances, carpentry, etc. Furthermore, the proponents of arts also suggest that art develops cognitive abilities by broadening a child’s imagination. To substantiate, A study by the University of Oxford concludes that skills such as painting, sketching, etc., develop the IQ level of a student 30% higher than technical skills.
Despite the benefits, the other school of thought suggests that art is not a wise investment of time for schools. The opponents of art often have a notion that studying art in school does not lead to a stable livelihood. A survey, conducted in 2019 by Stats Canada, reveals that 21% of arts graduates struggle to find jobs even after 6 months of graduation. Furthermore, some parents also argue that their children do not find art to be interesting. To expand further, the students, who love art, have developed the frontal cortex of the brain, which cherish creativity, and most of the students lack this development. Therefore, the art merely acts as a placeholder in their curriculum.
On discussing both sides of the arguments, I believe that art plays a vital role in the holistic development of the children and therefore it should be taught in school. Furthermore, the administration should encourage professions in the field of art that can increase enthusiasm in parents to push their kids to study art at school.
